Farm Bill

The Senate passes the five-year farm bill.

The bill, which has been pushed by Senator Debbie Stabenow, was passed last night. It will expand government subsidies for crop insurance... while making small cuts to food stamps. If passed by the House, it will also create new subsidy programs for Midwestern and Southern farmers... and farmers who weren't able to receive insurance last year, and suffered a loss, will be able to apply for financial support.  Funding will also be provided to programs such as local food efforts and farmers markets. However, the food stamp program will be cut by $400 million per year and will make it more difficult for people to qualify. The farm bill is expected to cost $955 billion over the next ten years.
