Rip Current & Beach Safety Awareness

The American Red Cross is issuing a warning for beach-goers this summer.

There are several ways to be prepared and keep yourself safe, especially from rip currents. Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore and can occur at any beach, the Red Cross says, in a news release. Be aware of the danger of rip currents and remember if you are caught in a current to stay calm and not fight it; swim parallel to the shore. Be sure to stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. And always check conditions before entering the water. For more information visit or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
