The Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) will present its 2017 Ludwig Community Benefit Award to three of its member hospitals’ programs during the MHA Annual Membership Meeting today. Win with Wellness Fit Club, a Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital community collaborative, is expected to be honored. Fit Club is designed to foster healthy lifestyle choices starting in early childhood. Hospital educators partner with 41 community resources to deliver Fit Club programming, serving 3,837 children in three counties and 14 schools.
The goal for Fit Club is a healthier lifestyle and BMI in children after five years. The program will finish its fifth year in 2018-2019. Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital , along with other honorees Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Sinai-Grace Hospital;and Munson Medical Center, Traverse City will receive $3,000 from the MHA Health Foundation to assist in its health improvement efforts.
Wednesday, the Mason County Sheriff's Office received a complaint of a reckless driver in a grey Toyota Prius on US-10 at approx. 9:13 am. The driver, 52 year old Patrick David O'Brien, from Muskegon, ended up rear ending a pickup truck which was slowing to turn into a business on US-10. Following the collision, the Prius crossed all five lanes of US-10, ran off the road and struck several trees. O'Brien was seriously injured in the crash. He was initially transported by LIFE EMS to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital and then transferred down state with serious injuries. He will be released to the mason co jail once discharged. O'Brien was arrested June 15 for 3rd offense drunk driving. At this time it is unclear if Mr. O’Brien suffered a medical condition or if a controlled substance contributed to the crash. Drug paraphernalia was found in his vehicle and a toxicology test is pending.
