A local marina owner has requested a temporary injunction to stop the start of construction on the Washington Avenue Bridge.
Ray Karboske II says there is contaminated residue under the marina, near the bridge, which will release toxins into the surrounding bodies of water. Karboske says he took soil samples years ago in order to dredge... but the samples came back tainted. He also says he was told by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality that because of this he would have to landfill it. Karboske has mixed feelings regarding the construction but believes the city should address the issue first. Ludington City Manager, John Shay, says the city already has the necessary permits and construction will begin next week.
