A 10-year-old autistic Manistee boy nearly drowns over the weekend.
In a news release from the Director of Public Safety in Manistee, the incident occurred Saturday afternoon when Owen James Skalandis, was reported in the river near River Side Marina, by his caretaker. The child was found face down, and unresponsive, in the water by fire officials. It was determined he floated west near the Cedar Street Marina, close to the Riverwalk. The boy was pulled out of the water and given CPR. He was turned over to paramedics who treated him on the way to West Shore Medical Center. He was than airlifted to DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids for additional treatment. As of yesterday, Skalandis is said to be doing well and could be released to his family tomorrow.
