A new report shows a 53% increase in the number of children needing food assistance in Michigan.
The report was released yesterday by Kids Count in Michigan which shows data between 2005 and 2012. In addition, nearly 207,000 kids were living in families investigated for abuse and neglect... the highest it's been in 22 years. Among the state's counties, Livingston was rated the best in child well-being. Lake County ranked the worst with a child poverty rate of 48%. To improve conditions, the report made recommendations such as putting the Earned Income Tax Credit back to 20%... which was cut to six in 2012... and raising the minimum wage. The Kids Count Report did find improvements in regards to education... and children living in out-of-home care, which decreased.
