A package of laws are now in effect in Michigan. Governor Snyder signed five different bills yesterday, which he says will help strengthen the unemployment insurance system by reducing fraud.
One controversial bill includes taking away benefits if an employee fails or refuses to take a drug test. The law will be revisited in a year to determine continuation or not. Another bill includes being able to retrieve greater funds paid out in fraudulent unemployment claims. “These are necessary updates to make sure Michigan is in line with federal requirements,” Snyder said in a statement.
