Death of a Local Michigan State Police Trooper

Update (11:15am): Police say they are investigating two different crimes scenes, one where the shooting took place and the other where the two suspects were arrested. No information on when the suspects names will be released.

Many area residents are mourning the loss of a Michigan State Police officer, whom is dead after being shot in Free Soil. Paul Butterfield of Manistee was conducting a traffic stop on North Custer Rd last night around 6:20 pm before being shot in the head, reports MCP.  A passerby found Butterfield a few minutes later and called 911. The trooper was airlifted by Aeromed helicopter to Munson Hospital in Traverse City, where he passed away during emergency surgery.  A male and female suspect were located in Manistee County at a convenience store, a couple hours later. Gunfire ensued and one suspect was shot. Both are currently in custody and they face charges in Mason and Manistee counties. Michigan State Police are investigating the situation and were assisted by the Sheriff's Departments from Manistee, Mason, Lakes and Oceana Counties. Ludington Police along with DNR and Fountain Fire also were on scene. Butterfield was assigned to the Hart Post and working for the MSP for the past 14 years.
