A Muskegon woman is sentenced for trying to have her husband killed.
21-year-old Julia Merfeld appeared in court yesterday for trying to hire an undercover detective, posed as a hitman, to murder her 27-year-old husband. The judge ordered Merfeld to 5 years and 8 months in prison, but no more than 20 years. The judge gave her near the minimum sentence due to her husband's plea to go easy on her so their two children aren't deprived of their mother. It will be up to the state to decide if Merfeld will get out after her minimum sentence or that she serve up to the max of 20 years. She is being credited for the 111 days she's already spent in the Muskegon County Jail. Merfeld was caught on video, from April, conspiring with a fake hit man to kill her husband in exchange she'd give him $50,000 out of her husband's $400,000 life insurance policy.
