Even though the total employment grew for the month of June, in Michigan, unemployment rates still increased from May.
The data was released yesterday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget. Unemployment raised to 8.7%, up from 8.5% in May. Total employment grew by 9,000 while the number of unemployed rose by 13,000 people. However, Michigan's workforce has increased each month for the last ten months. It's up by 2% over the year, compared to 1% nationally and unemployment is down by 5.6% in the state, in contrast to a 7.3% decrease nationwide. Leisure and hospitality saw the biggest growth for June, which is usually typical in the summer season.
