Spectrum Health has Received Eleven Environmental Awards.

Practice Greenhealth has recognized Spectrum Health Systems for its outstanding environmental achievements in the health care sector. 
Among the awards the hospital received, a partner recognition award was given for maintaining a 10% recycle rate for the hospitals total waste stream. 
Greg Soper who heads up the materials management and plant operations departments, helped organize an area wide recycling program for electronic equipment last year. That program had local residents contribute 10 tons or 20,056 lbs of equipment that would have otherwise gone into landfills.

The Chamber Announces Two New Businesses

Two new businesses joined the Ludington and Scottville chamber of commerce yesterday. Biggby Coffee, which boasts itself as the fastest growing coffee franchise in the Midwest, is opening its doors in July. Integrity Business Solutions also joined the Chamber. IBS is a family owned Michigan based office supply company.
The Chamber also announced its launch of the LEADS network and support group for local businesses to m for referral relationships and help promote strategic partnerships within the business community. The LEADS group is open to all Chamber members. Visit for more information.

Mason County Sheriffs Office Memorial Day Highlights

The memorial weekend also proved to be busy for the Mason County Sheriffs office as well. While most of the activities where regular occurrences like traffic stops and non fatal car crashes;  the holiday crowd felt like it had a little more to offer. Here are just a few highlights of the weekend report.

05/23 @ 1:00 PM        Warrant arrest, MCSO (City of Ludington), 23 year-old Ludington woman was arrested on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for Possession of Marijuana after she came into a visit an inmate

05/23 @ 8:16 PM        Disturbance, 6100 block of E. US10—Pioneer Party Store (Branch Township), subject became upset because she felt she did not get enough sprinkles on her ice cream cone and threw the cone at the clerk  

05/24 @ 9:04 AM       Disturbance, 5000 block of W. US10—American Best Value Inn (Pere Marquette Township), 20 plus persons were asked to leave the hotel by the owners following an argument over the waffle maker

05/25 @ 7:19 PM        Larceny of a dog, 6900 block of N. US31 (Free Soil Township), 6 month old female Rottweiler puppy was stolen from the complainant’s yard

Local Speller at National Compitition

The first part of the Scripps National spelling bee preliminaries are in Washington D.C. today. Hailey Hogenson a ninth grader at Mason county Central has been studying since she won the Ludington Daily News community spelling bee 60 days ago. After holding a BBQ yesterday for families and spellers, today the competition officially picks up with all 285 spellers to take a written test. The live begins tomorrow on ESPN3 @1:15.
