PostHeaderIcon Planned Service Outage

Residents in Muskegon and Oceana counties with Verizon Wireless cell service won't be able to receive or make calls during "nonpeak" calling hours on Saturday because of an upgrade to the system.  A company representative said Verizon is swapping frequencies with AT&T towers in the same area to provide better, more consistent coverage for customers.  The disruption is scheduled to start around midnight Saturday and last until 5am.

So if you experience cell phone difficulty this weekend, it is because of the upgrade and things will be back to normal by the start of next week.

PostHeaderIcon Ariel's PPO Stands in Court

Several weeks ago, MOM told you about a PPO that was granted to Ariel Courtland against April Reynolds of Grand Rapids.  In a rare move, Ms. Reynolds challenged the validity of the PPO in Circuit Court, yesterday afternoon.  In a hearing that lasted for almost two hours, Judge Richard Cooper questioned Courtland on the reasons why the order should remain in effect.

She stated that Ms. Reynolds posted disparaging information about her on three different Facebook pages.  She reiterated that she is not and never has been a suspect in the disappearance of her daughter, Baby Kate.  And, stated that she never has requested help from April Reynolds.

When Reynolds took the stand the story was completely different.  She claimed that Ariel's application for the PPO was 99.9% false.  She insisted that Ariel had contacted her in August.  But later admitted that she had posted numerous hostile messages on various Facebook pages.  After carefully considering all of the testimony, Judge Cooper ruled that the original PPO would stand.  That original order was granted on December 27th 2011.   Ariel complained said she had received more than 30 harassing phone messages on Christmas Eve.

PostHeaderIcon Suspects Headed Home

Law enforcement officials in Kentucky tell MOM News that the two homicide suspects may be on their way home--as early as today.  Deputies at the Ohio County Kentucky jail  say the 21 year old Patrick Bentley and 19 year old LeShawn Whipple have waived extradition and are being sent back to Michigan.

Last week two presumed murder victims were found in a mobile home on Amber  road in the northern part of Mason County.  35 year old Fernando Ramirez and 18 year old Lacey Bentley were both found dead at the home, one shot to death, the other asphyxiated.  Police in Kentucky already arrested the two suspects prior to the victims being discovered in Michigan.

Kentucky jail officials stated that Patrick Bentley and Whipple will be released to Mason County authorities when they are ready to make the trip back to Ludington.  For security purposes, the jail officials could not state the exact details or precise time of the release.

Both suspects have five felony charges waiting for them when they arrive back in Mason County.

PostHeaderIcon Vogue Seeks Grants

Efforts are escalating to seek grant funds to support the restoration of Manistee's historic Vogue Theatre.   Steve Brower, Chair of the Vogue Theatre Capital Campaign, reports that three grant applications alone will be submitted this week seeking $180,000 to support the $2.5 million campaign that would completely restore the inside and outside of the Theatre and two film viewing areas.    If the grants are awarded, it would bring the capital campaign total to within a few thousand of $800,000 dollars.

"Because of the economy, competition for grant funds is more challenging than ever before but the response we're receiving from public and private grant sources has been encouraging," said Brower.

The historic theatre's supporters continue to work hard despite the long fund raising road ahead of them.

PostHeaderIcon St. Patty's Day Celebration

This coming St. Patrick's Day will get the full fledged holiday treatment from Ludington's event planners.  A whole slew of fun activities aimed at getting residents downtown are being planned for the green holiday.  A parade is currently being organized along with a 5k race, themed meals at local restaurants and prize giveaways.   While nothing is etched in stone as far as dates and approval from the City Council but the St. Patty's Day celebration in Ludington, when it finally comes around, should be a great time for everyone who chooses to enjoy the festivities.
